- Waste & Recycling Program | Humber Arm South
Waste & recycling program for the municipality of Humber Arm South, Bay of Islands, NL. Western Regional Waste Management (WRWM) Waste/Recycling Collection The Town of Humber Arm South is committed to thorough and effective waste collection. HAS provides curbside garbage pickup (clear bags) and a mandatory recycling program (blue bags). Both garbage and recyclables are collected on Monday mornings. If Monday is a holiday, pickup will be on Tuesday unless otherwise notified. Waste should be placed at the curb on Monday by 8:00 a.m. There is a limit of 4 (four) bags for the regular garbage. There is no limit to the number of blue recycling bags. For more information on what can be recycled or disposed of, please visit RethinkWasteNL.ca which is managed by MMSB along with various regional waste management authorities. You can also review the Sort-It Western Reference Guide on the WRWM website. Garbage Collection The Town of Humber Arm South collects curbside garbage weekly. Here’s a quick list of things you need to know for garbage collection: Place your garbage at the curb by 8:00 a.m. Use plastic garbage bags or metal or plastic cans. Garbage must be in standard garbage bags measuring no more than 26 x 36 inches. Smaller than “grocery store” bags and larger yard waste bags are not acceptable. All garbage is required to be covered by an appropriate garbage net or sheet to prevent birds from tearing it up. There is a 4 bag limit per week. Exceptions apply after holidays. There is no limit to the number of blue recycling bags. Clear an area adjacent to your driveway for the placement of garbage during the winter and keep bags out of the path of snowplows. Flatten corrugated cardboard boxes and place in a bundle no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 30″. Hypodermic needles must be placed in a puncture-proof container prior to placing in the garbage – they must not be placed in your recycling. Broken glass must be clearly marked and packed to prevent the glass from sticking out of the container. Place the marked broken glass container at the curb separate from garbage bags. Do not place small grocery or kitchen bags at the curb. They will not be picked up unless placed in the garbage can or bags. Do not leave bulk items at the curb such as household appliances, furniture, car parts, etc. Do not leave hazardous waste at the curb such as paint and paint-related products. Please drop off during a Household Hazardous Waste Collection event. Do not leave construction and renovation materials at the curb. These materials will not be picked up during weekly municipal collection. Do not use white bags during winter. They are difficult to see in snowbanks. Containers of liquid will not be collected. Do not use chemicals (i.e. bleach) on garbage bags as an animal repellent. Residential Curbside Recycling Program Beginning July 16th, 2018, all residential homes in the Town of Humber Arm South are required to separate garbage from recycling. Household garbage must be put in clear bags while recyclables can all be combined in blue transparent bags. Please see the Sort-It Western Recycling Guide graphic for a list of things that can be recycled and put in blue bags. For a more comprehensive list, please see the following Sort-It Reference Guide . For more information, see HAS' Garbage Regulations

- Community Profile | Humber Arm South
About the municipality of Humber Arm South. Community Profile Humber Arm South consists of four communities, which include Halfway Point, Benoit's Cove, John's Beach, and Frenchman's Cove. These communities are about a 20-minute drive to Corner Brook, which is the second-largest city in Newfoundland. Given the proximity to Corner Brook, many residents of Humber Arm South access many services in the city. The four communities that make up Humber Arm South stretch out over 18 kilometers. The communities that make up the Town of Humber Arm South were first settled in the late 1800s. From the early to mid-1800s up until 1960, Woods Island was a thriving settlement. In 1960, Woods Island was resettled as part of a mass resettlement program launched by the provincial government. Many of the Woods Islanders came to settle in the communities along the South Shore. In 1972, the Town of Humber Arm South was incorporated. When driving from Corner Brook, Halfway Point is the first community you enter in the Town of Humber Arm South. Halfway Point received its name because it is located halfway between the resettled community of Woods Island and Corner Brook. The next community is Benoit's Cove which was named after the area's first family of French settlers - the Benoit's. Benoit's Cove is the largest residential neighbourhood in the town and is home to many businesses, facilities, and services. It has a Community Centre, Fire Hall, Fitness Centre, Walking Trails, Western Health, Family Resource Centre, playground, and Skateboard Park. Also located in Benoit's Cove is the Woods Island Resettlement House and Historic Centre, which is one of our most popular tourist attractions. The third community is John's Beach which was named after the John family, the area's first settlers. There is a fantastic view of the Bay of Islands from the beach and also a picnic and play area which leads to a walking trail and waterfall. At the foothills of the Blow-Me-Down Mountains is Frenchman's Cove, the fourth community in the town. Frenchman's Cove received its name because the first settlers were of French origin. There is a beach, a lighthouse, a playground, and a beautiful day park.
