Stella Maris Elementary School (1959-1995) and St. Peter's (1982-1995) were reorganized at this point due to declining enrollments. With the closing of Stella Maris and the transfer of our senior high students into Regina High School and later, Corner Brook Regional High, came the current Kindergarten to Grade 9 St. Peter's Academy.     This is the page for the Age-Friendly Community Committee in the municipality of Humber Arm South. Age-Friendly Community Committee The Town of Humber Arm South is committed to becoming Age-Friendly. The Town has already started the process by creating an Age-Friendly Advisory Committee and by hiring a project manager. We will complete a needs assessment and develop an action plan that will help our town in becoming more age-friendly. Upon completion of this phase of the project, our town will have had consultations with residents and will have adopted policies/plans that have been reviewed using an age-friendly lens. We will identify any gaps in services, and policies, including all municipal plans and regulations, to ensure we become more inclusive, especially to our older adults. We will pass a council resolution to actively support and promote a truly age-friendly town. We will establish a robust and concrete action plan that responds to the needs identified by our community assessment. And we will demonstrate our commitment to action by publicly posting the action plan.     This page is about the municipality of Humber Arm South. About Town of Humber Arm South Humber Arm South consists of four communities, which include Halfway Point, Benoit's Cove, John's Beach, and Frenchman's Cove. These communities are about a 20-minute drive to Corner Brook, which is the second-largest city in Newfoundland. Given the proximity to Corner Brook, many residents of Humber Arm South access many services in the city. The four communities that makeup Humber Arm South stretch out over 18 kilometers. The communities that make up the Town of Humber Arm South were first settled in the late 1800s. From the early to mid-1800s up until 1960, Woods Island was a thriving settlement. In 1960, Woods Island was resettled as part of a mass resettlement program launched by the provincial government. many of the Woods Islanders came to settle in the communities along the South Shore. In 1972, the Town of Humber Arm South was incorporated. When driving from Corner Brook, Halfway Point is the first community you enter in the Town of Humber Arm South. Halfway Point received its name because it is located halfway between the resettled community of Woods Island and Corner Brook. The next community is Benoit's Cove which was named after the area's first family of French settlers - the Benoit's. Benoit's Cove is the largest residential neighbourhood in the town and is home to many businesses, facilities, and services. It has a Community Centre, Fire Hall, Fitness Centre, Walking Trails, Western Health, Family Resource Centre, playground and Skateboard Park. Also located in Benoit's Cove is the Woods Island Resettlement House and Historic Centre, which is one of our most popular tourist attractions. The third community is John's Beach which was named after the John family, the area's first settlers. There is a fantastic view of the Bay of Islands from the beach and also a picnic and play area which leads to a walking trail and waterfall. At the foothills of the Blow-Me-Down Mountains is Frenchman's Cove, the fourth community in the town. Frenchman's Cove received its name because the first settlers were of French origin. There is a beach, a lighthouse, a playground, and a beautiful day park.

    Arts & Crafts in the municipality of Humber Arm South. Local Arts & Crafts There are many talented arts and crafts people in the area that do painting, furniture making, beadwork, and many of the traditional crafts of knitting and sewing. Two artists that work in several areas of the arts are Marilyn Bruce and Norah McCarthy. Both do individual pieces and in the last six years have worked together to do classes with the children and adults in the area. Marilyn and Norah are hoping to develop an online presence in the future and are currently displaying some of their work at the Salt Box Restaurant. Marilyn and Norah are working with clay, Marilyn is also working with local clay found in the area and has created pieces from clay found on Woods Island and Benoit’s Cove. Glass is another area that both have been exploring, using a kiln, they are creating glass jewelry, wall art pieces, and free-standing work.
